Hosting the Cookout
Around the country (and around the world), a sense of community is under attack. Togetherness is our strongest weapon and as such, it is the first thing that an opposing force will try to dismantle. And here I am again to tell you that in the face of adversity, hosting is a relevant tool. A tool that you can shape and sharpen and return to over and over again. Each time you create a safe place for joy, hope, and togetherness, the bonds we nurture while gathering refuel us for every battle that lies ahead.
The time to host is now. And cookout season is upon us. Below is your guide.
Happy Hosting!
PS - If you aren’t hosting right now, you can always opt for a bit of guesting and join me in New York on June 17th. I’m hosting a rooftop BBQ for the next To Be Hosted supper club. We’ll have a hearty chef-led dinner with unlimited wine, games, and great conversation. Tickets are available HERE.

Pro Tips for Artful Hosting
A Balanced Menu: Curate a menu that includes a variety of meats and vegetables coming off the grill with sides that cover all your dietary restrictions.
Stay Cool: For an extra hot day, set up an extra cooler where guests can find water, chilled fruit, ice pops, and spray bottles. I call this the cool down station.
Budget: If you are concerned about the costs of hosting, make it a potluck to share the financial responsibility with those who are able to contribute. Ask guests to sign up for a dish or other contribution when they RSVP.
Pantry: Check your pantry and make sure you have plenty of biodegradable plates, utensils, cups, serving ware and chafing dishes.
The Grill: Don’t let not having a grill be your excuse. Look into electric grill options! My favorite is HERE.
Entertainment: Keep guests entertained with a super-sized games like Jenga, Connect Four, Ring Toss, XL Dominoes or XL playing cards.
Music: Make a playlist that is about 2 hours longer than you anticipate the party to be. Include a mix of old and new music, and be sure to include disco, RnB and afro-beats. If you are including any songs that have a line dance or organized dance, try to spread them out throughout the playlist so you always have something to get people on their feet.
